DuckDuckGo is a company that makes a search engine and a web browser built around the idea that the best way to protect your data is to collect less of it. It launched in 2008, and according to its own about page it decided in 2010 not to track search history.

The search engine works like Google from the outside: you type a query and get a page of results. The difference, as the company describes it, is that your searches aren't tracked. The browser, available on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, adds tracker and cookie blocking and removes cookie pop-ups.

The company says the browser is free and that it earns money from search ads that don't rely on your personal data. It also sells a subscription that bundles a VPN, access to more advanced AI models, removal of personal information from people-finder sites, and identity restoration if your identity is stolen.

These are the company's own claims, so treat them as what DuckDuckGo says it does, not as an independent audit.

What it does and doesn't cover

A private search engine stops one company from building a profile of what you search for. It doesn't touch the data about you that already sits elsewhere. Your home address and phone number can still appear on people-search sites no matter which search engine you use. Searching privately and getting your listings taken down are two separate jobs.

DuckDuckGo vs. a VPN

A VPN hides your traffic from your internet provider and masks your IP address from sites. DuckDuckGo's search and browser reduce tracking by sites and advertisers. They overlap a little, but one doesn't replace the other.

How to protect yourself

  1. 1

Search and browse with tracking protection on

Using a privacy-focused search engine or browser means fewer companies log your searches and build ad profiles from them. Check the settings after you install, so you know what is switched on.

  2. 2

Check what the web already says about you

Search your own name and phone number in a private window and note which people-search sites show up. Those listings are the part a private search engine can't fix.

  3. 3

Remove your listings from people-search sites

Each site has its own opt-out form, and listings often come back. Our data broker guides show the steps. Serus finds where your address and phone number are listed and removes them for you.

  4. 4

Block trackers across your other browsers

If you keep another browser, turn on its tracking protection and clear third-party cookies regularly.

Frequently asked

Is DuckDuckGo a search engine or a browser?

Both. DuckDuckGo makes a search engine and a browser, and the browser has the search engine built in.

Is DuckDuckGo free?

The company says its browser is free and that it makes money from search ads that don't exploit your data. It also offers a paid subscription with extra features such as a VPN.

Does DuckDuckGo track you?

DuckDuckGo says its search engine never tracks your searches and that its policy is that it doesn't track you. That is the company's own statement.

Does DuckDuckGo remove my information from the internet?

A search engine only changes what it records about you. DuckDuckGo says its subscription includes removal of personal information from people-finder sites, which is a separate paid feature.
