How to remove yourself from Alphonso

Also known as Alphonso Inc.

Alphonso's consumer privacy page has a Do Not Sell My Personal Information button and other request options. To stop smart TV data collection at the source, turn off ACR (automatic content recognition) in your TV's settings.

On average, Serus sends about 184 removal requests per person, 89% of them to data brokers, so expect Alphonso to be one of many.

How to opt out of Alphonso

  1. 1

    Open the consumer privacy page

Go to Alphonso's consumer privacy page. It has a Do Not Sell My Personal Information button and links for other requests.

  2. 2

    Choose your request

The Do Not Sell link covers sale of your personal information. Alphonso's policy also lists rights to delete, correct and port data, and to appeal.

  3. 3

    Expect a verification step

Alphonso says it verifies requests and needs your IP address to do so.

  4. 4

Turn off ACR on the TV

Alphonso says you can withdraw consent to data collection at any time by turning off ACR in your TV's settings menu.

Watch out for

  • Alphonso says the sale opt-out is separate from opting out of data collection on your smart TV, which you do in the TV's settings.
  • Alphonso says it can't offer some services if you ask it to stop collecting data.
  • Alphonso's Privacy Center says third-party opt-out systems can't exercise your choice on your behalf.

Does it come back?

Alphonso doesn't publish a relisting policy. Viewing data is collected by the TV, so ACR settings matter after a factory reset or a new TV.

Your rights

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.
