How to remove yourself from Criminal.com

Criminal.com says it isn't a database: it's a public-records search guide with nothing to delete. The profile you found lives on a people-search site it sends searches to, so that's where the removal request goes.

On average, Serus sends about 184 removal requests per person, 89% of them to data brokers, so expect Criminal.com to be one of many.

Criminal.com doesn't say how long removal takes. Under California law, a business has 45 days to act on a deletion request (15 business days for an opt-out of sale).

How to opt out of Criminal.com

  1. 1

Read what Criminal.com says about itself

Its remove-my-records page states that it cannot delete anything for you, because the records people see come from other sites.

  2. 2

Find the site that holds your record

Search your name on Google and note each people-search or mugshot site that shows a profile. Criminal.com's page names Spokeo, Whitepages, BeenVerified, Radaris, MyLife and TruthFinder as examples.

  3. 3

    Use each site's own opt-out

The opt-out is usually linked in the footer as "Do Not Sell My Info" or "Opt Out". Submit it and confirm by email if asked.

  4. 4

Mention a sealed or expunged case

Criminal.com says most sites will pull a sealed record if you say so in the request. The court record is separate and goes through the court's own expungement process.

Watch out for

  • Mugshots get copied across many sites, so one removal rarely clears them all.
  • Criminal.com's removal page carries affiliate links to a paid removal service, so read it as a guide with a commercial interest.

Does it come back?

Criminal.com says brokers rebuild lists from fresh public records, so a profile you removed can come back months later.

Your rights

California: CCPA. If you live in California, the CCPA lets you ask a business to delete the personal information it holds about you and to stop selling or sharing it. Businesses generally have 45 days to respond.

California: the Delete Act. Data brokers that hold information on Californians must register with the state. California residents can use DROP, the state's Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, to send one deletion request to every registered broker at once.

Other US states. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon and a growing list of other states give residents a similar right to delete. Vermont, Texas and Oregon also make data brokers register with the state. Where no state law applies, the broker's own opt-out above still works for most people.

Frequently asked

Can I remove myself from Criminal.com?

The site says there is nothing to delete on criminal.com itself, because it's a search guide and not a database.

How do I get a mugshot or arrest record off the internet?

Criminal.com says you usually have to opt out of each site that copied it, and mention a sealed or expunged case in your request. Removing the official court record means going through the court's expungement process.

Can I really get removed for free?

The site says yes: it describes free opt-outs as a legal requirement for data brokers, with a free California tool (DROP) for residents there.

Will an opt-out stay gone?

Not necessarily. Brokers refresh their lists, so check again after a few months.
